Family Photos with your teens...

Capturing family photos can be hectic with kids no matter what their age is. Often times a mom will sit with me and share some of the objections she gets from members of the family especially her teens. But it doesn’t have to be a dreaded experience that will scar them for life. For real! I’m not kidding. It can be pleasant which will make it easier the next time you want to update that family picture on the wall.

So what’s the trick? Communication! Start by sharing your why? Why do you want to get photos done? Perhaps pulling out old photos of yourself in your younger years and telling them what life was like for you at that time. It creates a connection and perspectives that they can relate to along with having a visual. They’ll start to see that it’s cool to have memories to look back on as they continue to grow older.

Allow them to give their input in the planning stages. Ask them where they would like to go to have these photos taken? What fun places do you guys frequent together as a family that make them feel relaxed or happy? What should you wear? This gives them an opportunity to share what they like and what they don’t.

Make the prep days before the shoot fun! Moms with girls, get your hair, make-up or nails done together. Go shopping for outfits together. Dads, take your young guy for a haircut and lunch afterwards. You’ll be surprised how much quality time you’ll get with them and how it will actually make photo day that much better.

Allow your teens to see mom and dad’s connection. Demonstrating love for one another as a couple makes your children feel safe and secure. So don’t be shy with snuggles, hugs and kisses in front of the camera.

Finally, loosen up! Have fun! Be goofy! Crack jokes! Make weird faces and noises! You’re making memories and bonding at the same time. I love this last photo of the Jordan family. They’re making eye contact and smiling at each other as if I weren’t even there invading in their little private moment. But I was and I captured it for them. Now they can see what love looks like for their family.
