Throwing it Back to the 70s with a Retro Photoshoot
The 70’s bell bottoms, platform shoes, boots, and a whole lotta disco are some of the ideas we come up with when planning to recreate photos of this time period. This era is a goldmine of style inspiration, and recently, I had the absolute pleasure of stepping back in time for a throw back photoshoot that captured all the fabulousness of the decade. This blog post will walk you through the process, highlighting the key elements that we used to bring this groovy vision to life.
The Vibe: Before we even started thinking about outfits or props, we nailed down the overall aesthetic. We landed on a "Californian chic meets Studio 54 disco" vibe. This blend allowed for a surprising amount of versatility in styling.
The Wardrobe must-haves included:
One peice jumper - In a comfy denim fabric – fitted through the waist with a wide-leg starting at the knee to the angle .
Flowy blouse/top - Peasant blouses, flared sleeves, and anything with a bohemian feel instantly brought us back to that decade. Patterns like florals, paisley, and geometric prints are crucial to completing the look.
White squared toe boots - Essential for achieving that iconic 70s silhouette. We found these boots online to complete the outfit.
Accessories - This is where the magic truly happened! Big round earrings and oversized sunglasses.
The Props
To enhance the 70s atmosphere, we incorporated a range of props that contributed to the overall atmosphere, including:
A fur rug, multicolored knitted blanket, disco ball, a guitar, a vintage camera and furniture pieces. These fantastic photo props added to the visual narrative.
Location - WtrCooler Studio Tampa is an amazing place with multiple backgrounds, lighting equipment, natural light and a variety of props. This blue painted corner served as the perfect space for our vision.
The Photography
We opted for a less staged approach, wanting natural poses and expressions that reflected that era's sense of carefree attitude. We looked at a lot of inspirational photography from that time period to ensure we captured the same essence. The bold colors and contrast give it a clean yet iconic look.
The Result
The final photos are a testament to the collaborative effort, capturing the spirit of freedom, individuality, and carefree energy that defined the 70s. It was truly a fun-filled and creative experience that brought a vintage style to life, and the resulting images are a fun and stylish throwback!
